Directs and guides. Waist/lower back
• The waist/lower back is the area that extends from
below the shoulderblades to above the hips.
• Turn the front arm backwards and the rear arm
forwards to produce a transverse rotating force in the
area of the waist/lower back.
Meridian: Lesser Yang gall bladder meridian of the foot

  1. Twist the front arm backwards; turn the shoulders backwards
and downwards. (Acupoints are Jianjing ➔ Zhejin.)
  2. Sink the waist/lower back and twist it backwards.
(Acupoints are Zhejin ➔ Riming ➔ Jingmen.)
  3. Sit into the kua and sink the coccyx downwards.
    (Acupoints are Jingmen ➔ Huantiao.)

Muscle contour
• In the front half of the body the lower abdominal muscle and the oblique abdominal muscle are extended upwards while the trapezius and the latissimus dorsi muscles in the
back contract downwards in the opposite direction.

• In the rear half of the body the same muscles are stretched and compressed in the reverse direction.

Power
• This is a twisting force which comes from the waist/lower
INTERNAL CULTIVATION SKILLS
back: the left and right sides of the waist/lower back
are exerted simultaneously in opposite directions.
• Use in conjunction with Supporting Palm.
Other points
• Do not let the twisting of the waist/lower back move
the lower abdomen forward.
• In this posture the left and right sides of the body go in
opposite directions. Pay particular attention to this.
• The imagery of Great Peng Bird Spreads its Wings is in
the word ‘spreads’, since the Peng bird is said to be an
enormous bird and it unfurls its wings in a regular
sequence. Consequently you must pay attention to the
sequence of twisting and turning power.
