The first thing Baguaquan taught me is to ask “why” of everything.
My name us He Jing-Han, and I was born in January, 1955.
I started to practice martial arts from sixteen years old.
At first, I came into contact with Taichiquan and Xingyiquan,
and afterwards I inherited Baguaquan.
My teacher in Gong Bao-Zhai; grand master is Gong Bao-Tian,
and I am the fifth generation.
I came into contact with Taichiquan at the age sixteen, when I was in the high school.
After coming into contact, I easily fell in love with this kind of ancient stuffs.
Therefore, intentionally or accidentally, I went to learn it when having a break. I had free time anyway.
I didn’t stop practicing after I left, though.
I knew teacher Chen Tian-Yi in Hsinchu.
What teacher Chen Tian-Yi practiced is Xingyiquan.
And I learned some Xingyiquan from him.
I learned the basic techniques of Xingyiquan, which are hack, snap punch, drill fist, cannon, and horizontal punch.
I only practiced these.
And then I only learned one set of quan of Xingyiquan.
One day, he(teacher Chen Tian-Yi) told me that a teacher, Mr. Gong, in Taipei practiced Baguaquan.
“I had been there for four or five years. You may go to learn from the teacher(Mr. Gong),” said Mr. Chen,
“and see if you can learn something.”
I got to know my teacher in Taipei, Gong Bao-Zhai, through professor Ni Wei-Cheng.
My going abroad to promote Baguaquan was actually so-called lucky chances.
At that time, foreigners in Taiwan came to my class to learn.
The earliest one was an English, and another one was Slovaks.
They practiced martial arts for many years, and even were teachers teaching martial arts overseas.
Because they felt they learned a lot (from me), they invited me over after they went back to their home countries.
So, in spite of the U.S.A., which was the first country I went to,
the first place I went to in Europe is the U.K., and then Slovak.
When I went there, their students or people who were interested would come.
Among these people, there were people from other countries.
So, when I first started to teach abroad, I went from countries to countries; cities to cities.
Now, because my parents are elder, and they need to be taken care of, I only go (abroad to teach) once a year.
Personally, I think Baguaquan puts more emphasis on reaching the balance amidst the disproportion.
That is, to understand what particular body parts are related to the position,
and one needs to control and manipulate his body so it is clearer.
Baguaquan is a kind of dynamic Zen(a Japanese school of Mahayana Buddhism).
I like his teaching approach, and if you want to improve yourself, you need to practice on your own.
And if you want to practice on your own, I can teach you.
He understands the sophisticated human bodies, where every joint, tendon, and bone are.
He even teaches subtly how to move the organs.
It becomes comprehensive no matter it’s his martial art, spirit, or life.
It’s not merely practicing martial arts.
Every movement has its own important meaning, and also contains a thought.
He pursues the truth, and speaks with the evidence.
For example, the antecessor probably emphasized that when walking the palm of Bagua Palm, the braid should be blown up.
In that case, the teacher once had long hair for a while.
(He) wanted to do the experiment,
seeing to what degree or physical attribute one could reach this goal.
First of all, he is extremely patient when teaching.
Why? Because this is actually hard.
Speaking of ancient time, why were there often chasm of teaching?
First, teachers in ancient time could apply martial arts, but they were not necessarily patient to teach.
Second, teachers in ancient time could apply martial arts, but they couldn’t elaborate the thought.
Third, teachers in ancient time couldn’t elaborate the thought, and even if they could, they couldn’t systematize.
So, why would it be disconnected? Because these above are indispensable.
In terms of martial arts, the teacher makes it back to the essence, a core.
After learning the core, we can actually apply it to the society in various extent.
In fact, what the teacher teaches is not only martial arts, it also contains a lot of Chinese Taoist philosophy.
In addition, a sentence was left by our grand master, that is, martial arts are not just practiced to beat people.
Yes, beating people is a basis, but actually there are lots of deeper meanings behind it.
And through martial arts, the sport,
we sculpt the external and internal of a person, including the core thoughts.
This is also the central idea that the teacher has passed down to us over the past few decades. Yeah.
After I became the apprentice, the first thing my teacher said was to ask “why” of everything.
Practicing Baguaquan is to develop this habit.
This is also the case during the training process.
One must know why.
Why should this punch come out like this? Why not come out like that? Isn’t it?
Why is this teapot made in this shape?
Why is its mouth made to be curved like this?
We can’t take everything we come into contact for granted.
Knowledge is behind this.
But when you don’t ask why, you won’t know the wisdom and knowledge of the person behind this thing.
Therefore, I got into this habit.
I would wonder why about everything and everyone we get to know.
Of course, you may not necessarily pursue the correct answer.
But when you are thinking about why, you won’t stay at the superficial likes and dislikes.
Don’t be drawn by the superficial phenomenon.
So, so am I.
I think it’s a good way to learn.
That is, to ask “why” of everything.
