The first thing Baguaquan taught me is to ask “why” of everything.

0:00:21.787,0:00:27.914

My name us He Jing-Han, and I was born in January, 1955.

0:00:27.914,0:00:32.314

I started to practice martial arts from sixteen years old.

0:00:33.160,0:00:39.893

At first, I came into contact with Taichiquan and Xingyiquan,

0:00:40.238,0:00:43.170

and afterwards I inherited Baguaquan.

0:00:43.498,0:00:49.245

My teacher in Gong Bao-Zhai; grand master is Gong Bao-Tian,

0:00:50.350,0:00:52.454

and I am the fifth generation.

0:00:52.678,0:00:58.874

I came into contact with Taichiquan at the age sixteen, when I was in the high school.

0:00:59.703,0:01:06.469

After coming into contact, I easily fell in love with this kind of ancient stuffs.

0:01:06.883,0:01:16.135

Therefore, intentionally or accidentally, I went to learn it when having a break. I had free time anyway.

0:01:16.290,0:01:22.054

I didn’t stop practicing after I left, though.

0:01:22.762,0:01:28.526

I knew teacher Chen Tian-Yi in Hsinchu.

0:01:28.526,0:01:31.251

What teacher Chen Tian-Yi practiced is Xingyiquan.

0:01:31.562,0:01:35.841

And I learned some Xingyiquan from him.

0:01:36.000,0:01:42.144

I learned the basic techniques of Xingyiquan, which are hack, snap punch, drill fist, cannon, and horizontal punch.

0:01:44.199,0:01:45.336

I only practiced these.

0:01:45.750,0:01:49.099

And then I only learned one set of quan of Xingyiquan.

0:01:49.099,0:01:56.348

One day, he(teacher Chen Tian-Yi) told me that a teacher, Mr. Gong, in Taipei practiced Baguaquan.

0:01:57.401,0:02:01.974

“I had been there for four or five years. You may go to learn from the teacher(Mr. Gong),” said Mr. Chen,

0:02:01.974,0:02:05.459

“and see if you can learn something.”

0:02:05.925,0:02:17.232

I got to know my teacher in Taipei, Gong Bao-Zhai, through professor Ni Wei-Cheng.

0:02:18.285,0:02:27.624

My going abroad to promote Baguaquan was actually so-called lucky chances.

0:02:27.624,0:02:36.082

At that time, foreigners in Taiwan came to my class to learn.

0:02:36.600,0:02:42.174

The earliest one was an English, and another one was Slovaks.

0:02:43.193,0:02:50.494

They practiced martial arts for many years, and even were teachers teaching martial arts overseas.

0:02:50.822,0:02:58.261

Because they felt they learned a lot (from me), they invited me over after they went back to their home countries.

0:02:58.261,0:03:01.660

So, in spite of the U.S.A., which was the first country I went to,

0:03:01.660,0:03:08.495

the first place I went to in Europe is the U.K., and then Slovak.

0:03:09.358,0:03:15.433

When I went there, their students or people who were interested would come.

0:03:15.744,0:03:21.000

Among these people, there were people from other countries.

0:03:22.071,0:03:28.871

So, when I first started to teach abroad, I went from countries to countries; cities to cities.

0:03:29.354,0:03:37.156

Now, because my parents are elder, and they need to be taken care of, I only go (abroad to teach) once a year.

0:03:42.353,0:03:49.291

Personally, I think Baguaquan puts more emphasis on reaching the balance amidst the disproportion.

0:03:49.291,0:03:53.208

That is, to understand what particular body parts are related to the position,

0:03:53.208,0:03:59.024

and one needs to control and manipulate his body so it is clearer.

0:03:59.334,0:04:04.477

Baguaquan is a kind of dynamic Zen(a Japanese school of Mahayana Buddhism).

0:04:04.753,0:04:10.137

I like his teaching approach, and if you want to improve yourself, you need to practice on your own.

0:04:10.517,0:04:14.209

And if you want to practice on your own, I can teach you.

0:04:14.295,0:04:20.854

He understands the sophisticated human bodies, where every joint, tendon, and bone are.

0:04:20.854,0:04:25.720

He even teaches subtly how to move the organs.

0:04:25.806,0:04:32.865

It becomes comprehensive no matter it’s his martial art, spirit, or life.

0:04:32.865,0:04:35.400

It’s not merely practicing martial arts.

0:04:35.400,0:04:41.544

Every movement has its own important meaning, and also contains a thought.

0:04:41.801,0:04:46.218

He pursues the truth, and speaks with the evidence.

0:04:46.391,0:04:54.000

For example, the antecessor probably emphasized that when walking the palm of Bagua Palm, the braid should be blown up.

0:04:54.121,0:04:57.019

In that case, the teacher once had long hair for a while.

0:04:57.122,0:04:58.500

(He) wanted to do the experiment,

0:04:58.500,0:05:05.922

seeing to what degree or physical attribute one could reach this goal.

0:05:06.201,0:05:09.464

First of all, he is extremely patient when teaching.

0:05:09.464,0:05:11.706

Why? Because this is actually hard.

0:05:12.000,0:05:17.434

Speaking of ancient time, why were there often chasm of teaching?

0:05:17.520,0:05:22.024

First, teachers in ancient time could apply martial arts, but they were not necessarily patient to teach.

0:05:22.110,0:05:25.819

Second, teachers in ancient time could apply martial arts, but they couldn’t elaborate the thought.

0:05:26.389,0:05:32.084

Third, teachers in ancient time couldn’t elaborate the thought, and even if they could, they couldn’t systematize.

0:05:32.257,0:05:36.000

So, why would it be disconnected? Because these above are indispensable.

0:05:36.000,0:05:42.767

In terms of martial arts, the teacher makes it back to the essence, a core.

0:05:42.767,0:05:48.376

After learning the core, we can actually apply it to the society in various extent.

0:05:48.566,0:05:55.401

In fact, what the teacher teaches is not only martial arts, it also contains a lot of Chinese Taoist philosophy.

0:05:55.884,0:06:01.337

In addition, a sentence was left by our grand master, that is, martial arts are not just practiced to beat people.

0:06:01.924,0:06:07.706

Yes, beating people is a basis, but actually there are lots of deeper meanings behind it.

0:06:07.706,0:06:10.500

And through martial arts, the sport,

0:06:10.500,0:06:16.437

we sculpt the external and internal of a person, including the core thoughts.

0:06:16.523,0:06:22.892

This is also the central idea that the teacher has passed down to us over the past few decades. Yeah.

0:06:25.326,0:06:30.814

After I became the apprentice, the first thing my teacher said was to ask “why” of everything.

0:06:32.317,0:06:34.818

Practicing Baguaquan is to develop this habit.

0:06:35.716,0:06:40.306

This is also the case during the training process.

0:06:40.548,0:06:42.669

One must know why.

0:06:43.066,0:06:47.587

Why should this punch come out like this? Why not come out like that? Isn’t it?

0:06:47.587,0:06:50.295

Why is this teapot made in this shape?

0:06:50.916,0:06:53.797

Why is its mouth made to be curved like this?

0:06:53.797,0:07:01.461

We can’t take everything we come into contact for granted.

0:07:02.134,0:07:05.222

Knowledge is behind this.

0:07:06.000,0:07:13.491

But when you don’t ask why, you won’t know the wisdom and knowledge of the person behind this thing.

0:07:15.269,0:07:17.355

Therefore, I got into this habit.

0:07:17.908,0:07:24.898

I would wonder why about everything and everyone we get to know.

0:07:25.364,0:07:28.452

Of course, you may not necessarily pursue the correct answer.

0:07:29.039,0:07:37.963

But when you are thinking about why, you won’t stay at the superficial likes and dislikes.

0:07:38.636,0:07:42.000

Don’t be drawn by the superficial phenomenon.

0:07:42.950,0:07:44.708

So, so am I.

0:07:44.914,0:07:49.280

I think it’s a good way to learn.

0:07:49.280,0:07:52.333

That is, to ask “why” of everything.
